KSMBA releases debut single 'Emwe'
The Naarm-based DJ shows off their techno chops.
Fresh off the back of a major string of sets across the likes of Pitch Music & Arts Festival and Teletech UK, as well as support slots for Mall Grab, Effy, STÜM, and LSDXOXO to name a few, Naarm/Melbourne’s KSMBA (they/them) has released their first ever single.
‘Emwe’, meaning one, is the first taste of KSMBA’s upcoming EP. The debut represents a word from their family’s dialect (Runyankole) from Western Uganda.
KSMBA, in speaking about the track, shared that they were “heavily influenced by my Ugandan heritage, which has such strong traditions around drumming and dancing, as well as from the early Detroit techno which was so rooted in Political resistance, Blackness and Queerness. I also was heavily influenced by the scene that I feel extremely grateful to be a part of: Black queer artists working in Naarm."
While only having been active as an artist for 18 months, KSMBA has clearly demonstrated their ability to deliver what so many modern audiences are vying for, groovy hard techno. ‘Emwe’ is no different, maintaining a consistent drum-driven pace that clearly takes direct inspiration from KSMBA’s heritage, for a refreshing twist on modern techno.
Listen to ‘Emwe’ here, in advance of KSMBA’s full EP releasing mid-July.
