“First ever” children’s book on Chicago footwork released in the US
‘Elvin Discovers Chicago Footwork’ enlists legendary Chicago producer DJ T-Rell, who created music for the book’s album.
The “first ever” children’s book based around the sound and dance styles of Chicago footwork has been released in the US.
Elvin Discovers Chicago Footwork landed in August, created by non-profit dance education organisation Creative Netwerk, and is both written and illustrated by members of the Chicago footwork community.
The 24-page activity book aims to “strengthen literacy and the arts through our love for Chicago footwork culture”, according to the book’s website.

“ChicagoFootworkDotCom, Jones Corner Store, and Creative Netwerk have contributed to the creation of Elvin Discovers Chicago Footwork as a means to encourage reading and to inspire artists of all ages to engage in the joys of dance, design, writing, and more.”
Elvin Discovers Chicago Footwork also enlists legendary Chicago producer DJ T-Rell, who created two tracks for the book’s album ‘The Break Down Vol. 1’, which aims to spotlight important footwork and house music.
Both tracks were created alongside students from Creative Netwerk’s dance clubs in Chicago, as well as non-profit dance organisation Notes For Notes, which provides young people with free access to music skills and equipment.

The book also lands alongside some educational videos around the genre’s dance styles, with several dance tutorials soundtracked by DJ T-Rell’s tracks.
“We are excited to present this coloring book to serve children and families through formative literacy, arts, and community building experiences,” Creative Netwerk’s website reads.
