New documentary featuring Fatboy Slim and Carl Cox chronicles the history of Ibiza

A new hour-long documentary highlighting the history of Ibiza throughout the decades has been released.

The Evolution of Ibiza: Can the White Isle retain its legendary magic? was released at the end of July, produced by AlphaTheta, Pioneer DJ’s parent company.

Over a 68-minute run time, the documentary features the likes of long-running Ibiza legends Carl Cox and Fatboy Slim alongside faces newer to the White Isle, including Chloé Caillet, Charlotte De Witte, and Franky Wah.

“This feature-length documentary looks back at the history of the island’s party scene from hippy hangout to becoming the world’s no. 1 clubbing destination, and asks, ‘how did it happen?’,” reads the documentary’s description.

“We talk to DJs, club promoters, officials and locals to discuss what Ibiza’s future could look like. We hope you enjoy our journey exploring the evolution of Ibiza’s club scene.”

The documentary, directed by Dan Tait and Laurence Koe, looks back to the emergence of dance music in Ibiza and the hippy period of the 1970s that grew a bubbling music scene on the island.

Interviews with local club owners, promoters, and punters all tell the story of modern Ibiza and the current state of dance music on the island, from its comeback after the pandemic to recent struggles through the cost of living crisis.

The film also features interviews with Ibiza’s current tourism director Juan Miguel Costa, who talks about the impact of COVID on the island’s nightlife economy, and the influx of luxury resorts in Ibiza.

In recent years, Ibiza has implemented several new rules and regulations to curb an inundation of misbehaving tourists, including banning late-night alcohol sales and issuing fines of up to €8,000 for those without accommodation.

“To balance different kinds of tourism on the island, it’s not easy,” says Miguel Costa in the documentary. “It means that we have to balance all these different types of problems.”
