Local label Sumoclic relaunches as ‘dottidot’

Local label Sumoclic, responsible for releases by the likes of Mietze Conte, Beaks and its most recent signing, Headaches, is set for a rebrand.

The label was initially launched in 2020 by friends Maxwell Byrne (Golden Vessel, 1tbsp) and Connor Grant (Akure, Harley Girl) to self-release their own music. It quickly became a collaborative collection of DIY artists working together in the pursuit of creative freedom and flexibility in a commercial label-dominated music space.

The relaunch sees Maxwell Byrne deepening Sumoclic’s commitment to independent creativity in its rebrand to ‘dottidot’. The roster is still set to include all of Sumoclic’s previously released artists, but with a broadened scope to include more visual and narrative-driven projects.

Byrne’s own commitment to storytelling has been made clear in his two most recent releases under 1tbsp, where a strong visual concept in its promotion and live shows underpinned the productions themselves.

In a quote, Byrne shared with this focus on visual mediums is set to take ‘dottidot’:

“In 2023, I began collaborating with screenwriter Lorenz Uhl (Bye Bye Bowser, Söder) on multiple projects. Last year, we travelled and wrote together on the 1tbsp tour across America, and in periods between shows.

It was at that time that we developed a script for ‘Sandtrap’, a short film directed and scored by me, co-produced by Pork store Studios, and starring Rhys Muldoon, Senuri Chandrani, Tara Morice and Ben Lee. ‘Sandtrap’ will premiere at the Bolton International Film Festival in the UK on October 1st, marking the first film co-produced by ‘dottidot.’”

‘dottidot’ is also set to launch with a collaborative event with Mexican-based promoter Knockout, with whom Byrne has worked closely over the last two years. That event, including 1tbsp, Mietze Conte, Cheery Chola, Soltera and Jeansboy happens on Saturday, September 13 in Mexico City.

The label’s next evolution, now widening its scope across the globe and to other creative mediums, is set to redefine what an independent Australian creative collective is capable of.
