Fred again.. releases edit of Joy Orbison’s ‘flight fm’

Fred again.. has released an edit of Joy Orbison’s recent hit ‘flight fm’ in a mashup with Lil Yachty’s ‘Flex Up’ featuring Payboi Carti and Future.

‘flex fm (freddit)’ landed yesterday, August 12, months after it was first teased at Fred again..’s New York shows alongside Lil Yachty and Overmono.

The bootleg-inspired edit mashes up “two insane tracks”, Fred again.. said on Instagram yesterday alongside a video of him performing the edit live, adding: “It was just sorta lucky how well these two tunes worked together.”

‘flex fm (freddit)’ was made on a flight to New York where Fred again.. was heading to meet Lil Yachty and Overmono ahead of the release of their joint track ‘stayinit’.

“This is just real SoundCloud energy to me, like obviously you can hear with your ears I did basically nothing on this,” Fred again.. said after the track’s release.

Speaking on the edit, Joy Orbison explained: “I love that this track has reached so many people outside of any cultural or sonic ideas I had about it, that’s one of the most enjoyable things about making music.”

“Basic Channel’s ‘Phylyps Trak II’ was garage to my ears, Oizo’s ‘Flat Beat’ too. ‘Flex’ was ‘flight’ but now it’s something new, now Atlanta’s involved,” he said.

He added that when making the original track, he was thinking about early records from the likes of DJ Narrows and Mampi Swift, and listening to pirate radio stations from your bedroom “back when you had to have that annoying plastic chord thing halfway up the wall to listen”.

In a video showing Fred again.. and Lil Yachty listening to the edit together, Joy Orbison commented that it was “surreal to see two worlds collide in such a casual way”.
