Dark Mofo shares its predictably unpredictable 2025 lineup

Dark Mofo, the Tasmanian-based 'outsider' arts, music and culture festival has this morning announced its 2025 program, as eclectic and macabre as one might expect.

The festival, launched in 2013 as a winter counterpart to the summer MONA FOMA festival surrounding professional gambler, art collector and businessman David Walsh's Museum of Old and New Art, Dark Mofo has grown a reputation for the weird and wonderful. Events predominantly take place at night and celebrate the darkness of the winter solstice, with previous years featuring the likes of Nicolas Jaar, FKA Twigs and Autechre to name a few.

After taking a break last year due to "rising costs and changing conditions", the festival has returned with a new artistic director at the helm. Chris Twite, who has worked for the likes of Brisbane Festival, Sydney Festival, the Sydney Opera House and who was a part of Gadigal Land/Sydney's FBi Radio for almost twenty years, has joined Dark Mofo all too aware of the needs of the event and its loyalists.

"The legacy of Dark Mofo is greater than me," he shared.

"It's a challenging, confronting arts festival that's unlike any other in Australia, and it's my role to just shepherd it through the next era and make sure that it outlasts me. The audiences who come are curious — whether that's someone visiting who wants to find a late-night party, or whether it's a family with a kid in a stroller in the blistering wind on the foreshore in the middle of the night."

Since its inception, Dark Mofo's programming has been hard to predict. This year's lineup is predictably unpredictable, with a mix of everything from darkwave to progressive metal, cloud rap, and baile funk.

On a dance and electronic tip, Thaiboy Digital, DoloRRes, Shackleton, Space Afrika, Rival Consoles and more are set to feature, with a series of evenings entirely programmed and coordinated by Berlin Atonal.
