Beloved Eora venue Cafe Fredas announces its closure

Cafe Freda's, a bar, restaurant, cafe and regular haunt for both local and touring DJs, has this morning announced the closure of its Taylor Square location.

The venue, which opened on New Year's Eve in 2020, has long acted as a stand out merging of hospitality and music within Eora's community. While other venues have opened and flourished in the time since 2020, Cafe Freda's will, in its current form, be remembered as a crucial piece of DNA that made Oxford St and greater Eora, what it is.

As David Abram, Cafe Freda's owner, shared in a social media post, "we signed a one year rolling lease understanding that at some stage in the future the site would be developed. We didn't know if this would be two years or ten. It turns out it will be four (and a bit)."

The original Freda's was a late night bar situated near the current site of Central Park in Chippendale, right on the cusp of Sydney's CBD. Named after Abram's mother, the venue had a cult following with countless local and international acts travelling there to play. Promoters like Rimbombo, Heavenly, Vibe Positive, Pelvis and more were regular facilitators of fun at a venue focused on community.

Cafe Freda's was, in David's words, "an evolution." With his partner Carla, the two created a space that was a glimmer of hope in a city decimated by red tape, and in an iconic location ready to have life breathed back into it.

"Oh. And in case you were wondering. Freda's won't be gone for long, see you soon..." David teased.

Read Cafe Freda's full statement below, and keep an eye out for which location they'll grace with their presence next.
